about

Brood X cicadas tunnel out of the ground every 17 years, make an unholy racket up in the tree line for a few weeks, mate, and then die. And then their offspring live underground for 17 years and repeat the cycle. As a species, they will probably outlive humans. This particular brood makes a type of mating call that no other brood on the planet makes. At their peak, the noise they produce can reach 100 decibels. Therefore, these recordings are meant to be played loud.

Recorded June 4-5, 2021, Cherokee Park, Louisville, Kentucky + Hoosier National Forest & Versailles State Park, Southern Indiana.

Track 1: Raw field recordings made with Primo EM272 omnidirectional mics and Zoom H5 recorder, minimal EQ, edited for continuity. Track 2: Processed field recordings, sine waves.

As heard on Neighbors Noise with Jesse Kaminsky, WFMU: www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/105131
